It is known that Nexus 7 lacks a few features such as the absence of a rear camera and the lack of a HDMI or MHL video output. In order to watch movies on the Google Tablet, you can use the Nexus Q, load the movies through the USB port or stream content from Google Play or Youtube.

A free app available from Google play could solve some problems – Wi-Fi Media. The app allows Android devices such as Nexus 7 to play movies, music and be present on any screen with the help of any Cavium PureVu compatible streamer, like HTC’s Media Link HD that costs $90. It seems the app doesn’t mirror your screen so you are limited on playing content from the Nexus tablet via DLNA so that means no YouTube, Netflix or anything similar. Also the doesn’t support normal file types such as AVI for example.

Other features that the Wi-Fi Media incorporates include the ability of login to Facebook and Picasa and stream images from these accounts and…this is basically it. Check the video bellow for a hands-on video in what concerns this app.

Google’s Nexus 7 it’s very popular these days, with several major retailers running out of the Google tablet in its first day of sale in U.S.

GameStop unveiled on Friday that it sold out its first two tablet allocations for the Nexus 7 and it’s awaiting a third allocation sometime in the future. ”We blew through the first two allotments,” a GameStop spokesperson said.

Sam’s Club and Staples listed the slate as being sold out on their websites yesterday. Office Depot continued to offer the Nexus 7 on its website for pre-order, limiting the purchase to two per person.

Adorama posted on Twitter on Friday afternoon that Nexus 7 already sold out and it was shipping all the stock to the customers that pre-ordered the device. You can still pre-order from Adorama’s website but the estimated ship date is around “mid-August”.

The Nexus tablet has been available for pre-orders directly from Google and some retailers in the last few weeks and Google reported that it began shipping the Nexus 7 on Friday.

Did you manage to pre-order or have you got yours delivered?

According to a teardown analysis by IHS iSuppli, the Nexus 7 tablet costs around $152 to build, giving Google a modest profit on the 16GB version of the slate.

IHS agreed in its report that Nexus 7 competes more with Amazon’s Kindle Fire than with Apple’s iPad:

“Google’s Nexus 7 represents less of an attempt to compete with Apple Inc.’s market-leading iPad, and more of a bid to battle with Amazon’s Kindle Fire,” Andrew Rassweiler, senior director, teardown services for HIS, said in a report today. “The two platforms are similar in many regards, including the use of the 7-inch display, the eschewing of 4G wireless connections in favor of Wi-Fi, support for virtually identical battery lives and the same pricing for the entry-level models. However, the Nexus 7 has superior specifications to the Kindle Fire, giving it a more attractive feature set that may make it more desirable to consumers.”

The materials of the 8GB Nexus 7 version cost $151.75 or $159.25 after the manufacturing costs are added to the sum. The 16GB Nexus 7 version on the other hand costs $159.25 or $166.75 including manufacturing overheads.

“Like Apple, Google has realized it can boost margins by offering more memory at a more profitable price point,” IHS iSuppli said. “Google is charging $50 more at retail for only $7.50 in additional memory cost at the BOM level. This adds $42.50 to Google’s bottom line on each sale of the high-end model.”

IHS iSuppli reported in November that the materials cost of the Kindle Fire including manufacturing is $201.70, meaning that Amazon was selling the Kindle Fire at a loss by pricing it at $199. Now the Kindle Fire materials cost has been reduced to $133.80, not including manufacturing expenses, thanks to the decline in component pricing. “These considerable cost reductions provide a breather for Amazon in terms of the subsidy it initially paid to penetrate the market,” IHS iSuppli said today.

Carphone Warehouse, the UK mobile retailer, has recently revealed the release date of the Nexus 7 in UK.

The retailer just started to accept pre-orders for the Nexus tablet built by Asus under the Google brand and the expected shipping date announced is July 27, a few days later than the reported release date announced by Currys, Dixons and PC World. Carphone Warehouse priced the Google tablet at £199 for the 16GB model.

It is important to note that the UK version of the Nexus 7 won’t have all the features like the US version, including TV shows, music and magazines due to licensing issues. Still for £199 you will get a lot, which is not easy to say compared to what at other tablets offer at the same price.

Staples announced that it will offer the Google Nexus 7 tablet in its stores later this month but till then, it is now available to pre-order from its website.

The retailer specified that the tablet it’s expected to ship after July 12 and the current price of the 16GB Nexus 7 version is $249. Staples is among the first retailers to bring the Nexus Tablet into their stores, after GameStop announced that it will sell the device as well at a price of $250 for the same version.

Other retailers are expected to offer the Google tablet trough their stores in the near future. It is expected from Amazon not to be among them, taking into account the rivalry between Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

ASUS announced a couple of days ago trough Twitter that they have “got things covered” in what concerns the upcoming Nexus 7.

The announcement included a wide variety of cases / covers having different colors such as teal, pink, light grey, orange, black, and blue. These covers are an addition to the only cover available on the Play Store that has of color dark grey.

The official covers from the Google Play Store for the Nexus tablet cost $19.99 USD and allow the user to charge and listen to music through the headphone port at the same time. In what concerns the weight of the covers, they are only 4 oz/113g, making them quite lightweight. The covers attach on the rear of the Google tablet and have a swinging front cover in order to protect the display when not in use. In regards to branding, there is a big Nexus logo on the back of the cover with a smaller ASUS logo at the bottom of the case.

The price of these covers has not been made public but we expect to be around the same as the one available on the Google Play Store.
